FISH HATCHING

My name is Gift Snowbird, from Delta State in Nigeria
From a family of 3 and loves Agriculture very much.
I studies Agricultural Science in University of Benin Edo state
Am now a vet in Vicki & Co. Ventures

In my research done have found out that most Nigerians are poor because every body wants oil money
and in the process neglect farming which is suppose to be our major source of income, fish agricultural farming is what i could call the best in Nigeria agriculture, there is lot of profit you could make, but most people neglect thinking of white collar jobs. Dream big : There is lot to invest in farming.

FISH HATCHING/ MAINTENANCE

Fish farming in Nigeria consists of two most important types, which could either be operated separately or as an integrated process. The two divisions are the Nursery Fish farming and the Grow Out Fish Farming. The grow out fish farming is dependent of the nursery fish farming because you can't grow fish without the nursery. But, like I said, they can be operated separately by two different farmers.
The nursery involves the inducement of the female fish to lay eggs, which are then fertilized, incubated and hatched. Those little fishes are know as fries. These fries are then nurtured from between three and four weeks into fingerlings which is the size suitable for use in the Grow Out farming.
A catfish farming is a major investment operation. And so, starting one needs careful consideration.
In between the nursery and grow out operation is what we referred to as the primary operation. It involves the nurturing of the three or four weeks within which they could grow into post fingerlings, mini juveniles and juveniles respectively. These can then be nurtured for between four to five month into grow out or table size fish suitable for sale and consumption.
Going in catfish farming involves the following
Step One: Land To Use
This is very important. One has to acquire at least half plot of land in a suitable location. This means, you must consider good access road, closeness to market and labor. If the land is already available, it is good. Then we apportion it as follows:
1.   Location of ponds
2.   Location of farm house
3.   Location of water supply and lastly, location of drainage facility. The last point is very important, as you don’t drain your water to constitute public nuisance.
Step Two: Pond Planning
Here, one has to determine whether one wants to go into a big or small-scale commercial venture, secondly, the pond system to adopt, Re-circulatory system, earthen pond or concrete/plastic pond or both.
Once the pond was dug and the area has been developed, there is nothing one can do to undo the work and recover the cost. And so, extensive evaluation must be done by someone planning to start a catfish farm before he finally decides whether it is wise for him to pursue the project.
Construction Considerations

Where should the pond be located? Does the site have enough supply of quality water (from wells or springs)? There are minimum water flow rate requirements in building a pond for a catfish. Will the source meet them? Employ professionals to test whether the water supply volume and flow rate meets standard requirements.
Is the water supply suitable for catfish farming? Try growing a few catfish using water taken from the target source.
Is the area suitable for pond construction in terms of soil composition and permeability? Ideal soil for pond construction is one with good compaction property. One resource you can run to check on this is your local soil management office.fish farming will require some water movement. Will you be able to obtain permits and other necessary licenses for the operation?

Step Three: Water Supply Source
The best water for fish farming is from bore hole. One or two must be sunk to guarantee steady water supply. Overhead tanks for holding water should also be installed. The mechanism of pumping of water must be back up facility. The system must not fail.
Step Four: Pond Construction
It is advisable to engage the service of a consultant. The success or failure of this project depends largely on construction of standard ponds that can stand the test of time.
Pond Design and Construction
One major consideration in designing a pond for catfish production is the flatness or steepness of the area and the source of water supply. For a generally flat area that has access to a well, a levee pond could be built. Watershed ponds are built for steeper areas near a natural source of water.
The depth of the pond is also crucial as this influences the availability of oxygen for the fish. And so is the amount of fish per surface acre of water. Check catfish growing manuals for standards to adhere to.

For one to get the most profit for a fish harvest, it is necessary to determine buyer requirements when planning the season’s production. Consider what buyers demand in terms of weight, frequency, size and price. One can sell the season’s harvest to fish processors or directly to consumer. The latter results a greater return to the farmer.
Putting up a facility for catfish farming is a large investment. The most major investment for a catfish farm is the construction of the pond. Once that is done, you are as good as through to your business.

                    REQUIREMENT NEEDED IN FISH HATCHING

To begin with you must inject your fish in other to avoid scripting of eggs by the female fish

1.) Male and female fish (Approximately 2 male and 6 female)
2.) Injection meddle
3.) Warm environment
4.) Water
5.) Net
6.) Antibiotics or Vaccine
7.) Oxiginated Tank

Injecting Your Fish
by Gift Snowbird

People often laugh when I tell them that I inject my fish.  They laugh harder when I say, “Of course I put them to sleep first.”  The truth is that every Koi Hobbyist will one day need to inject their fish either with Antibiotics or with a Vaccine.  Now, you could pay me to come to your house and inject your fish for you, but the procedure is actually quite simple.

Here are the steps I go through.  If you are a little scared, try it first on a fish that is either very cheap, or too sick to save.

1 - Prepare two holding tanks. One with heavy oxygen & one with anesthetic.

    2. - Have all injections and materials prepared before catching the fish.

    3. - Catch the fish to be treated and put them in the oxygenated tank.

    4. - Put 1 or 2 fish into the anesthetic tank at a time.  click to enlarge

    5. - Keeping the sleeping fish in the water, take the time to exam its body fully.  The underside can hide ulcers or other problems that are not detectable while it is swimming free in the pond.  Any ulcers, anchor worms, etc. should be treated at that time.

    6. - Hold the fish with one hand gently against the side of the tank in front of you.  The fish should be upside down and partially submerged.  click to enlarge

    7. - Quickly make the injection (explained later).  click to enlarge

    8. - Return the fish to the oxygenated tank until it is revived.  Do not keep the fish under anesthetic any longer than absolutely necessary.  Too long, and the gill function will cease, causing the fish to suffocate.  Don’t worry that the fish appears dead, as long as you still see gill movement, it is alive.  click to enlarge

    9. - Return the revived fish back to the pond.  The fish may take 10 to 15 minutes to revive in the oxygenated tank, depending on the strength of the anesthetic and the particular fishes response.

Injection Descriptions:

There are three injection sites on a Koi; Intraperoteneal (IP), Intramuscular (IM), and  Intravenous (IV).  IP is the most common & the most effective method.  Antibiotics or vaccines injected into the peritoneal cavity are absorbed into the fish’s system slowly as opposed to oral  medication which will mostly pass straight through.

IM is the second choice for injection and is used if the Koi has ulcers that have broken through to the body cavity.  Any medication injected into the peritoneal cavity in a fish of this condition could drain out through the ulcer.  The draw back to IM is that the muscle tissue of the fish will contract and force some of the injected material to be squeezed back out the injection site.  IM can sometimes leave visible welts from trauma to the muscle tissue.

Although I have seen photos of IV injection, I have never done it myself.  Articles always warn against this type of injection and reserve it for experts and then only on really large fish.  The problem is the ability to actually hit the vein which runs through the center of the fish.  It is performed on the under side of the fish near the tale.

Injection Directions:

The actual IP injection is performed by injecting in the abdomen at a 45 degree angle between the caudal fins and the anal vent.  The needle points towards the head of the fish and enters approximately 2/3 of the way from the anal vent, 1/3 back from the caudal fins   Insert the needle quickly, plung smooth but quick, & withdraw the needle.  You may fill some resistance from cartlidge below the skins surface.  If the fish is large and the cartlidge difficult to penetrate, you can insert the needle slightly to one side of  the center line.  You can not avoid hitting a scale, so don’t waist time searching around with the needle.  Scales will grow back if lost and since you are injecting on the underside of the fish, any temporary damage will not be visible.

The beauty of the IP injection performed under sedation is that the fish does not thrash about.  Without the thrashing, you will not lacerate an organ.  In addition, with the fish relaxed & upside down, the organs tend to settle out of the way a bit.  You might still puncture an organ, but with the fine needle pushed in and pulled out cleanly, there will be little danger.  I have never lost a fish from injecting this method.

The IM injection is performed with similar needle angle and direction, but it is in the muscular tissue along and to the side of the dorsal fin  With a muscular injection, you must keep the needle in the muscle tissue and press the plunger as you with draw the needle giving room for the fluid to enter.  Because of this, the needle must be inserted deeply.

I suggest that the first time you try any of these injections, you ask someone with experience to help you.  It is always possible to hurt or kill the fish if the injection is not done properly.

After injection leave the fish in water for 24 or 30 hours (i.e must be in a warm environment) depending on the vaccine used for injecting the fish.

To commence hatching script the eggs from the female fish into a bowl
Cut the male fish with a new blade (razor blade) from the belly i.e be careful not to kill it
Remove the sperm from the belly of the male fish (its like a white seal)
Cut the sperm open and pour the liquids from it into the eggs from the female fish
Add drip to the mixture and mix very well.
Place your piece of net in a bowl of water (I.e water must not be cold)
Pour some of the mixture in the net with the water
Leave it in your warm environment before a period of 98 hours your fish must be hatched

The male fish that is cut open must be sewed properly to keep it alive and if it is well fed within a period of 3 months it will be ready to produce another sperm for hatching
